Dee's Romper Instructions

Not my Daddy’s T anymore!

Design http://www.chantells-creations.com/Easter.htm

I used to make these when my girls were little.  Of course they are 28 and 25 now so Woe is me those days are long gone.

I didn’t have an embroidery machine back then so I used hubbies and mine old T’s for the girls.

You will need:

1 T -  I like using Men’s Small medium or Large, you can even go up to the big mans T’s for the larger kids.  It still looks great and they like getting the “hand me downs”

4 pieces of 3/8” elastic to fit the forearm of child and calf of the child

1 strip of snap tape with 9 snaps

Directions:

I opened up the arms (just enough so I can put the elastic in, and then I sew it back up.

Then I slice the middle of the T up 5 ½”  (so far, I have not had to adjust this cut or the amount of tape, but then my grands that I make them for are 5 and under.

I put the elastic in the “leg” casings and stitch to hold it.

I pin the snap tape down and this part I have the snap tape going to the wrong side on the front and the right side on the back.  (The picture shows the top of the T with the tape done.)  I have never made it with out the little bit of gathers in the center of the T.  I suppose if I eased it in that would look ok, but I have found in the past the kids didn’t have any problem with the little bit of gather I had.  So I left it….. “Creative touch”  LOL

Once you have this done, you’re done.  It takes me maybe 30 minutes from start to finish after the Embroidery.

By the way, I use a

Men’s Small for the Grands 2-2 ½

Men’s Medium for 3-3 ½

Men’s Large for 4- 4 ½

Men’s Xlarge for 5 5 ½

You get the picture right?  It really is going to depend on how large or Petite your little one is.  Halie turned 5 this month and can still fit the Medium.  She’s very slender and petite.

You can also use the kids T’s for younger kids.  I am taking a Boys T size 6-8 and turning it into a romper for my niece’s new baby to be.     I ‘m taking that and turning it into a ballerina romper for her.  Since this baby is the first “Great Niece” you can image I’ll be just a little OVERBOARD.   LOL

The ideas are endless actually.  Use some fabric and turn the Colored T’s into your own works of art, use paint, fabric, or embroidery.  Sailor suits; a make shift mini tux for a good giggle for a new born baby boy; Use your applique designs and oversize it on the front.  Take your daughters old T’s and make a romper for her baby to wear.  She’ll love the idea that her “baby” is wearing mommies to small for me anymore shirts.  Special note: Take those stitch outs you have been doing and Applique them on a T and Hey Instead of trashing them turn them into Treasure!    J    Then you have no waste!

Hey you ladies with the craft corner.  This is a quick, inexpensive way to make something new for your corner.  Out of one 99cent thing of elastic, I can get 6 1/2 rompers out of it.  And even the snap tape - 9 snaps are only 13” in length.  (Be sure to cut ½ way in-between the snaps so you can turn the rough edges and finish the look)  I found the white men’s T’s at Shoppers Rule for only $1.10.  With 8 grands, The price is VERY right.  Shoot, even their colors aren’t so bad.

I think all total; This T was only $2.50 minus the stitch out.

Hope you like the romper.  Have fun.  Dig out those old T’s with designs on the front and use them too.
